Book Review: A New Earth / by Johnny Michael

Humans. We’re all a little nuts. Perhaps insane. But the good news is that we can become aware of this mild insanity a-brew in our minds and alas evolve. Here’s some gatherings of thought from reading A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle.

This book has lots to do with Tolle’s concept of the ego. This “ego” varies a bit on how we commonly use it in modern language. Rather than the use of, “Screw Larry. That guy has an ego!” Meaning that guy is a self- absorbed, self-serving conceded jerk. He refers to the ego as human beings innate behavior to create a sense of self. We all do this. And there’s a broad spectrum of egos. Small ones, big ones. Loud ones, quiet ones. They’re all crafting a form of self image and eventually competing. They clash by judging and casting a difference between what we see as our self, and other beings. This is at the core of humanity’s insanity.

As an example, the egoic thoughts sorta work like this, “I want to read books. I want to read more books to be smarter. I want to be smarter than him. This might impress her. To prove it, I’m going to write blog articles about the books I read, showing how smart I am…”

It’s about overcoming our inability and blindness to see the true nature of what we are. To evolve we must not let the sense of self or identity separate us. We must find stillness, a separation and awareness from our thoughts and eventually come to truly see our own beings and other beings as one. Realizing we are neither superior or inferior to anything or anyone. Realizing the same DNA runs through you, me, that chimpanzee and that big oak tree. In a way, we’re all flowers and fauna of the earth. We’re all related. Everything in the Milky Way galaxy and beyond — to as far as the known universe we can see. All the stars. All the light that has come to reach us. We are all life. We just have to awaken to it. It’s up to you, me and Larry.
