Making A Blue Apron Video / by Johnny Michael

Back filming in the kitchen again. This time I served myself with a Blue Apron. I’ve been getting Blue Apron boxes on and off for quite a handful of years now. As a single being living in a city, it’s been a great way to learn how to cook, get introduced to new ingredients I’d never think of grabbing at the grocery store and it’s certainly convenient to have a box of food shipped to your place. Conveniently I also already owned a Blue Apron from Blue Apron so wearing that clever piece of kitchen garb added a nice touch to the video. The overall idea of Blue Apron is pretty smart too, they send the precise amount of supplies to you so there are less food waste and stuff you’d have to stock up on if you were to run around snagging things you needed. And there’s also usually plenty of extra food for leftovers.

This recipe I cooked was a Poblano Stuffed Pepper. Here’s a link to the recipe. I’m a fan of veggies and getting heaps of nutrition, so I added cauliflower and mushroom to the dish. I find it helps to know your palette well. I end up tweaking and tailoring these meals to my liking quite a bit. Also important to note, dance moves in my cooking videos are an essential ingredient.

At this point, I’m less concerned about making money on YouTube and more focused on just practicing how to film and edit things together. It’s also fun to get comfortable and play in front of a lens. Plus this boy gotta eat!

To edit and figure out how to make it look decent I’ve been diving into SkillShare courses to slap and jangle my way around Adobe Premiere Pro. That’s been super helpful. But I’m still feeling like I have a lengthy trek to trot. I tried to light up my kitchen scene by rounding up some household lamps, but it still wasn’t as bright as I needed. To shoot I used my rinky Canon Rebel t3i, my iPhone rigged to a DJI Osmo Mobile 3 — plus a shot or two from a GroPro. (like the in-the-oven shot)

While I’m constantly trying to learn and make my projects sharper, here are some notes to self on how to improve — Needs better lighting. A mic. Gotta learn how to color correct + grade, it feels like such a pain in the ass and I just want to ship it after it’s cut, but I know it will help the look. I just gotta quit being lazy about that. Also better music. Wasn’t thrilled with how the second half felt. But I was trying to keep it royalty-free since I was including Blue Apron. To solve for that I’m thinking about Artlist, Epidemic Sound or Comma. Also thinking I need to push myself to create a simple animation intro. And maybe once quarantine is over I can have some guests on the cooking show.

Alright, I’m gonna go see what’s in my fridge now. Catch ya later.
