Just The Funny: Sketch Writing Recap / by Johnny Michael

A Handful of Reasons I signed up for a sketch comedy class at Just The Funny in Miami, Florida.

  1. For fun, and for the love of funny stuff.

  2. Force me to create work.

  3. Show up to places where I can meet fellow funny and creative people.

  4. Learn from others about the craft of humor and writing.

  5. Push me to get up on a stage.

  6. Make other people laugh.

  7. Daydream about being an actor/comedian while still maintaining my day job.

Just The Funny is just the right place for all of that. Here’s a Hi video and a couple of pics from the class show night. And how about a hoorah-haha! for more comedic education and practice to come.

As a class, we wrote sketches throughout an 8-week course. At the end, we performed some of our favorite sketches at the class show for an audience. One of my favorites that I wrote is this Bank Robber and Pitcrew Guy Sketch. The task of the assignment was to combine these two unrelated characters in a funny way. I played Sir Rabbit with an energetic and distinguished English spy accent and my mate Dustin played the pit crew guy offstage. Our teacher/stage manager Rick dropped in some pretty solid car SFX to complete the scene. To add a little silliness, I found some toy race car driver helmets backstage. And it was just plain ol’ fun, and one of my favorite characters to play on the show. You can read that sketch here.
