Creative Practice | Hi High Socks / by Johnny Michael

I’m all about creative practice. There’s that tired-old athlete analogy. You’ve gotta train, work hard and keep your skills sharp. The same goes for creative activities, skills or talents. Whatever you want to call ‘em. You’ve gotta put in the work. Do the edits, draw up the ideas, create, execute, film, shoot, post, and draft the headlines. Here’s a recap of creative reps I took on for the Hi High Socks available on shop.hijohnny.com. I treat my creative growth like I am my own client, sometimes I have to put my projects on the back burner and make sure I don’t lose the foundations that support me, but if you’re serious about making a living doing creative work, it’s something you should consider too.

Footsie just got friendlier. The headlines just keep coming! Check out the updated Hi High Socks product copy. I am technically a seasoned copywriter professional, but to keep growing in that dept and pick up some inspiring new tips I’ve been taking a Learning Path on Skillshare that I would recommend to all Copywriting students, it’s by Ruth Clowes and you can find it here.

Hi Socks. For Making Friends Every Step of the Way

For Instagram, I created a cut that was right on :30 that felt more commercial-esque with a little VO. I also created a :15 story that is a tighter version of what’s below.

The idea process for this one started with the photo shoot, picking up the camera and exploring with product set the wheels in motion. For the shoot, I simply set up a clean white-sweep background and put on the socks. Once I started to move my feet, an idea for a little dancing video came to mind.

Because I was standing on paper and in a tight video frame I figured Bob Marley was the right vibe. Creating this opened up the idea for future (and more complex) ideas where we could have different dancers and different feet doing their thing for a series.

Putting our friendly toes in all the channels, even Pinterest. Here’s an example of a Pin I created and some fresh captions to get along with it.
